Brief Introduction to
Center for Russian Studies
Founded in 1999, the Center for Russian Studies of East China Normal University became one of the National Key Research Institutes of Humanities and Social Sciences of China’s Ministry of Education in
September 2000.
The Center has a total of 24 research fellows, 10 full-time researchers, 14 part-time researchers and has educated 88 Ph.D. students and 177 Master students.
During the past ten years, the Center has undertaken 44 research projects (with a total funding of 11 million yuan), published 50 academic books and more than 300 papers in core academic journals and won 15 outstanding achievement awards from the China’s Ministry of Education and Shanghai Municipality.
The Center conducts original research in the history of the former Soviet Union, the history of Russian/Soviet literature, Russia’s post-Soviet transition and Russian foreign policy, and has produced a number of acclaimed publications.
Landmark achievements include Era of Transition (five volumes), edited by Feng Shaolei and Xiang Lanxin, published in 2005, and On the Chinese Research History of Russian and Soviet Literature (four volumes), edited by Chen Jianhua, published in 2007.
The Center focuses primarily on basic research in combination with applied research. It also conducts macro, strategic and long-range research on applications and countermeasures, striving to play the role of a national think tank.
In 2006, Professor Feng Shaolei’s reports on the SCO Summit and America’s adjustment of its Central Asia strategies were published as an internal reference note of the Xinhua News Agency and Experts’ Suggestions from the Social Sciences Committee of the Ministry of Education. In May 2008, Professor Feng Shaolei submitted a consultation report entitled “The Mediterranean Plan and a Diplomatic Opportunity for China” to the Shanghai Decision-making Advisory Committee. Both the Politburo of the CCP Central Committee and the leaders of the Shanghai Municipal government praised the report. Dr Yang Cheng, Deputy Director of the Center, published “The implementation of Russia’s strategy on the Large-Scale Development of the East” as an internal document of the Party Literature Research Center of the CCP Central Committee in April 2007. It was read by high-ranking central, provincial and ministerial officials.
The Center has a specialist academic journal, Russian Studies, widely circulated in China and internationally. Articles published in this journal are collected into the CSSCI database.
The Center has held a series of important national and international symposiums.
Since 1999, the Center has been hosting the National Internal Seminar on Russian Studies, originally proposed by the former Mayor of Shanghai City Mr Wang Daohan.
The annual symposium has had a significant impact in China. The seminars have proved intellectually vibrant and productive, providing an important reference and consulting service for national decision making authorities.
Important international conferences have included “Symposiums on Great Power Relations after 9.11” (2001), “Trans-Atlantic Relations” (2004), “United Nations Reform and Global Governance: an Asia-Europe Perspective” (2006), and “Trilateral Relations among China, USA and Russia: structure, perception and politics” (2008).
To promote internationalization, the Center has sent 105 people abroad and hosted 305 foreign experts since 2000.
The Centre has established good academic ties with the Institute of the Far East at the Russian Academy of Sciences, the Higher School of Economics in Moscow, the Carnegie Moscow Center, the Davis Center for Russian and Eurasian Studies at Harvard University, the International Institute for Strategic Studies and the Center for European Reform in London, the University of Hamburg in Germany, Charles University in Czech Republic, the Slavic Research Center of Hokkaido University in Japan, and a number of other institutions.
The present director of the Center is Professor Feng Shaolei, who is also a member of the Academy of Comprehensive Social Science Research in China’s Ministry of Education and of the Sino-Russian Friendship Committee for Peace and Development.
Every year since 2006, Professor Feng Shaolei has been invited to participate in the Valdai Disscussion Club, where he meets the Russian president and discusses Russia and major international issues with Russian leaders and western colleagues.
Brief Introduction to ECNU
East China Normal University, one of China’s key universities under the direct auspices of the Ministry of Education, is sponsored by the prestigious national program “Project211” and “Project985”
ECNU is a high level normal university founded in October 1951, based on the former Great China University and Kwang Hua University, incorporated with part of Fudan University and Tongji University etc. in 1959. This status was reaffirmed in 1978. ECNU was also one of the first 33 higher education institutions authorized, by the State Council in 1986, to establish their graduate schools. In 1996, ECNU passed the prerequisites appraisal and became one of universities sponsored by the major national program “project 211”. In 2006, the Ministry of Education and Shanghai Municipality signed into a partnership for co-sponsoring the development of the university, qualifying ECNU as a member of the “Project 985” and facilitating ECNU’s efforts and progress towards a world-renowned high level research university.
With two campuses located in Minhang and Putuo District respectively totaling an area over 220 hectares, East China Normal University has long been reputed as a ‘Garden University’ for its beautiful campus scenes.
At present the university is made up of 18 full-time schools and colleges, 2 unconventional colleges and 4 advanced research institutes, with 54 departments offering 67 undergraduate programs.
The university is officially authorized to offer programs:
—in 2 Primary Disciplines and 5 Sub-Disciplines, which are enlisted as National Key Disciplines;
—in 5 disciplines, which are enlisted as Preparatory National Key Disciplines,
—in 12 disciplines enlisted as Shanghai Key Disciplines.
It boats a faculty body of over 4000, among whom there are 1986 full time teachers (including over 1000 professors or associate professors), 11 academicians of Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese Academy of Engineering (6 of them are academicians of both Academies), 11 members of the “State Council Academic Appraisal Committee”, 8 specially hired professors or lecture professors for the “Yangze Scholar Award Program” sponsored by the Ministry of Education, 9 “state level talents” chosen by the “New-Century Talents Project”, 10 “National Outstanding Youth Fund” award winner, 80 specially hired professors or lecture professors for ECNU “Zijiang Scholar Award Program”, and 105 tenured professors. At present, the total number of students is more than 49,000 with over 14,000 full-time undergraduate students and over 7,700 graduate students (including those in a Master’s program), among them more than 2700 are international students.
EastChinaNormal University attaches great importance to the internationalization in its development and enjoys a wide influence and reputation in the world. The University has established strategic cooperative partnership with many world-renowned universities, such as ENS Group in France, the University of Pennsylvania and New Your University in USA, Tokyo University and Kobe University in Japan, and the University of Melbourne in Australia, etc., and has been carrying out academic exchanges with over 100 universities and institutions of Great Britain, France, Germany, Japan, the United States, Canada, Australia, Korea, and Russia, etc. more than 180 famous scholars have been conferred/invited as honorary professors, advisory professors, visiting professors, or adjunct professors of ECNU. The Ministry of Education’s Training Center for Secondary school Principals located at ECNU is a state base for the training of secondary school principals in Mainland China and advanced studies of those in Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan. It enjoys the reputation as the “Huangpu military School” for secondary school principals.
The university sponsors or supervises publication of more than 20 academic journals and periodicals. The collection of the library has exceeded 3,900,000 volumes. 16 primary or secondary schools are affiliated to the university.
